If the story of Christmas tells us how to believe . . . then the music of Christmas tells us how to feel.  -  Derric Johnson

Useless Facts for 2003

For those keeping score again at home this year, here's some useless statistics of our 2003 display:

   - Total lights for 2003: almost 40,000
   - Power used:  about 120  amps spread across seven dedicated 20 amp circuits
   - Added cost of electricity in December: still not as bad as you might think
   - Extension cords used: lost count but approximately 105 totaling about 3,400 feet
   - Number of extension cords chewed by raccoons: 1 (4 in 2002)
   - Number of raccoons harmed by our display: ??
   - Total characters: 43 (including penguins, polar bears, snowmen, elves, reindeer,
      snowboarding penguins and Santa)
   - Setup time: about 60 hours,  teardown time about 36 hours
   - Storage: everything (almost) is stored in an attic above our garage taking up about 250 sq. feet

   - Music programming: several people have asked about the programming of the song and what's involved.  Depending on the song (length, tempo, etc.), the average song has about 400 specific timings that we have defined to be programmed.
Each of those 400 timings has 96 circuits  that must be programmed - making one song have over 38,000 decision points.  We usually run about 7 songs in one set bringing the total to over 250,000 actions that the computer makes in one set  lasting 21-23 minutes.  The process of programming one song is tedious - that's why we start the process usually in mid-late August.
